Old Firehouse on Marlow on the Auction Block
Through noon on August 26, the City of
Cincinnati's Real Estate Services Division is accepting sealed bids for 1654 Marlowe Avenue, formerly the home of Fire Station No.
51.
Bids will be opened at noon on August 27, and the property will be sold
"as is" via quit claim deed to the highest bidder.
The appraised fair market value of $55,000 has been set as the minimum bid.
Built in 1914, the 3,800-square-foot, single-bay firehouse was vacated in
November 2009 following the completion of a new $3.8 million,
12,000-square-foot facility at the corner of Hamilton and Llanfair avenues.
Originally built as a police substation, Cincinnati Fire Department's Engine 51
took over the property following renovations in 1926.
Sealed bids may be sent to Real Estate Services of the City of Cincinnati; c/o
Property Management; Room 122, City Hall; 801 Plum Street; Cincinnati, Ohio,
45202. Questions may be addressed by calling Joe F. Pendley at (513) 352-3612
or Lottie Allen at (513) 352-5362.

Garage Sale Nets $1000 for Leukemia Society
Pam Schaible's summer garage sale earned $1,000 to fight
leukemia and related diseases--and that's just one of her fundraisers, which
will end with a triathlon on Sept. 11. Schaible and her daughter, Elena Halbeisen, are both
members of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training.
They'll participate in the Tawas Bay Triathlon in Michigan--and yes, that does entail swimming, biking and
running! Pam says that ten people donated items to sell at the
two-day sale, giving shoppers much to choose from. She and Elena have organized
several other fundraisers, and have already raised their combined goal of
$6,900. But they urge you visit their Team in Training web pages (Pam's here, and Elena's here) to make additional donations to their worthy cause.
In
the meantime, they'll be running, biking, and swimming to prepare for one of
sport's most grueling races. We'll let
you know how they do in September! Story by Gail Deibler Finke.
Editor Ken's comment as a former resident of Tawas, Michigan: What a beautiful place to stage that triathelon! One is tempted to take a drive North to watch Pam & Elena participate. It's only 400 miles. |
Looking for a
King or Queen of CleanElizabeth Sherwood & Amy Finnegan Cleaning Up in 2009. | College Hill's annual Make a Difference Day (MADD) this year is on Saturday, October
23. MADD is the invigorating, cool fall morning that dozens of community volunteers
scour the neighborhood picking up litter and trash, pulling weeds in public
view areas, and generally spiffing up the 'hood ahead of winter. We're looking for someone to step up to coordinate the activities of MADD.
There are lots of folks who have worked MADD like mad for several years
who will fill you in on what needs to be done. We already have folks who
have volunteered to take on some of the necessary projects to make MADD happen--but we need a head honcho. As always, as overall presenters, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful will supply the
MADD equipment, supplies and volunteer T-shirts. If you're ready, willing and able to help MADD continue in College Hill, please
email Mary Cinquina at MAC@GDM.com or Phyllis
Slusher at phyllis.slusher@usbank.com. Thanks to Phyllis D. Slusher for this article.

McAuley Welcomes New Eight Grade Class With a Splash
McAuley High School was the site of the second annual Summer Splash, a back-to-school
preview day for eighth graders. The
future freshmen had a great morning going on a scavenger hunt, making bouncy
balls, playing foreign language games, doing an internet hunt, and conquering a
theology obstacle course. They finished
the day by having lunch with McAuley ambassadors.
The girls posed for this photo before their day began. | McAuley High
School is a comprehensive Roman Catholic school for young women, sponsored by the
Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. McAuley has a forty-nine year history of academic excellence and is

145-Year-Old Home on Groesbeck Auctioned Off for $1000
A 145-year-old home on Groesbeck Road in College Hill was apparently sold for $1000 in an online auction ending at 9:10 am August 17. The property, formerly owned by the U.S. Marshals Service, had an opening bid of $1000. The winning bidder, whose online nickname is lenk, placed the one and only bid. Wonder who he or she is? The two-and-a-half story structure was completed in
1865, and boasts Greek Revival pilasters and Gothic Revival gables. The Hamilton County Auditor
reports that the home has 2,800 completed square feet, and sits on
nearly a half-acre of land within walking
distance of the business district. See the auction page for more information. |

Remember Christ's Community When You have Garden Extras
Did you know you can donate excess produce from
your garden to your friendly neighborhood food pantry? Christ's Community in College Hill has joined
the Ample Harvest Campaign--a nationwide effort to connect neighborhood food pantries with local backyard
gardeners wishing to share their excess garden bounty with neighbors in need. You can increase access to healthy, high-quality, and safe food for food
insecure families in College Hill by bringing your excess garden produce to Christ's Community. With one out of eight American families now relying on pantries to help feed
them, pantries like Christ's Community have a hard time meeting the demand. Summer is
traditionally the most challenging time to keep the shelves stocked.
