Dear Reader,

Election Day is over. Congratulations to those whose candidates and issues won; condolences to those whose candidates and issues lost. Either way, please remember to throw away your campaign yard signs -- or take them inside to preserve for posterity, if you're so inclined. And if you didn't vote, remember: No complaining about anything for the next four years!

The College Hill news keeps pouring in, and this week -- in addition to eating some stories I will have to rewrite -- my computer stopped letting me resize my photos or store any new. So some great stories and photos have to wait for next week  when Ken Lyon is back. His computer savvy is far greater than mine.

As usual, if you've got news -- send it here.

McAuley Restructures, Names First President

McAuley High School announces it switch to a president-principal structure and named Cheryl Sucher, who has been principal for 22 years, its first President.

"The president-principal structure will allow McAuley to continue to grow and flourish, concentrating on the highest level of academics and technology, and providing the best possible experience for our students," noted McAuley Board of Trustees President Lori Landrum. "We are very confident in Cheryl's leadership abilities and her genuine passion for McAuley and our students. We have no doubt that she will take McAuley to new heights."  McAuley Mohawks Logo

In her new role as president, Mrs. Sucher will be charged with development, sponsorship, recruiting, alumnae relations, and long-range planning duties. The principal's role will be more traditional - dealing with curriculum development, extra-curricular activities, faculty, and students, and managing the day-to-day tasks of running the school.

The Board of Trustees has formed a search committee to hire a principal.

Free EPA Job Training Available

Looking for your first career, or a new career?

The College Hill Forum sends word that the City of Cincinnati is recruiting qualified men and women interested in participating in a free job training program funded by the EPA.

The Brownfield Job Training Program will train people to become Environmental Field Technicians. The free 8-week course is open to Hamilton County residents 18 and older who meet minimum requirements.

Applications are available at Super Jobs, 1619 Central Parkway or 1740 Langdon Farm Road. For more information contact Lavern Mayfield at ICWUC (International Chemical Workers Union Council), (513) 621-8882.
Next Wednesday, Buy Pizza for Aiken Ladies

A new fundraiser for an Aiken club makes it easy, and tasty, to contribute.

Buy a pizza any Wednesday in November from the College Hill LaRosas and benefit Young Ladies of Aiken, a three-year-old club that helps girls become young ladies. "They share, laugh, and talk," says Aiken Lead Secretary Paula Davis. "The older ones mentor the younger ones. And they participate in community service -- we just did Make a Difference Day, for instance, and we always do the College Hill potluck."

Future plans include a Ladies on Campus Day, hoodie sweatshirts for members, and other activities to help young women make a positive difference on campus and in their lives.

You to turn in a special form with your order. Pick one up at Aiken or at many local businesses, or call Paula at 363-6761 for more information.

Thanks to Paula Davis for this story.
Local Man Helps Hearts

A College Hill resident was featured on a Channel 12 Medical Edge spot about a new screening program for student athletes at Christ Hospital.

The test detects a rare genetic heart problem, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, that is not usually detected until a young man or woman passes out, or even dies, during intense activity. Student atheletes are particularly at risk.

Resident Ken Bertke works for Midwest Ultrasound, which is performing the test for schools and athletes. The video is gone, but you can read his quotes (and more information about how to get the test) here.
ARCH Thanks the Community

ARCH writes in with this letter:

The Arts Revival of College Hill, (ARCH) wishes to thank all those who contributed to the entertainment at the Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival of 2008.

Special thanks for their financial support go to The College Hill Gardeners, The College Hill Business Association, Mary Cinquina, Beverly Croskery, Amber Nash, Bob Cload, Mary McLane and Ray Betts. We also thank Dave Hawkins, who not only organized the entertainment program, the stage, and use of his equipment, but also contributed as much in physical energy as well as donated considerable time and talent.

It was a great day of sunshine and fun shared by the entire community and friends.  A terrific time was had by all.

New at Rec Center: Early Morning Boot Camp

If you've been interested in trying a Fitness Bootcamp at the College Hill Rec Center but the times don't fit your schedule, new Early Morning Bootcamp is for you.

Major Batton, owner of TempleBuilders and a College Hill resident, has been offering bootcamps in the neighborhood at the Rec Center and the Contemporary Dance Theater (Town Hall). New Early Morning Bootcamp will be offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings starting Nov. 17. Several payment options are available.

Unlike fitness clubs, which offer a variety of fitness machines and classes, fitness bootcamp is an indoor/outdoor fitness program combining instructions, coaching, and motivational training. Read more at the link above.

For information about times, sessions, and special pricing for online payments, call Major Batton at 344-3141.
Blood Drive Nov. 25

It'll soon be Thanksgiving, and one way to say thanks is to help others at the First United Church of Christ Blood Drive.

Parish Nurse Cindy Beckman writes:

This blood drive is in memory of a beloved member, Ewald Bauknecht, who always wanted to do something to help others. He was a multiple organ recipient and knew the importance of blood donations as a lifesaving measure. We hold our annual fall blood drive in his memory and are looking for donors who would like to donate blood as a community service.

The Hoxworth Mobile Van will be in the church parking lot from 6-8 pm for your convenience. Appointments are required and may be made by calling me at (513) 541-7302, ext.14. Questions can be directed to that number as well.

Co-editor Ken Lyon is on a well-deserved vacation, and until he comes back there won't be a mini-calendar at the end of the newsletter. But don't let that deter you -- click here for a list of all the great things coming up in College Hill!

The eNewsletter is published every week or two by the volunteers listed below. Our purpose is to help make College Hill an even better place to live, play and do business by publishing a broad spectrum of news for and about College Hill, with an emphasis on stories of College Hill people working together to improve our community.

The eNewsletter is independently prepared and published by neighborhood volunteers.  It is not affiliated with the College Hill Forum Community Council.

Opinions expressed here are not necessarily those of any College Hill or other organization--or even of the editor. The inclusion of an article is not necessarily an endorsement. The fact that something isn't in the eNewsletter is not necessarily a lack of endorsement--it's most likely because no one told us about it.

eNewsletter photos are often edited to remove extraneous material.

Send us news that you think would be interesting to your College Hill neighbors--and we'll very likely publish it. Email to eNewsletter@CollegeHillOH.net.
