Dear Reader,
Happy Halloween!
There's far more news
to report than your poor co-editor has time to enter, so
expect another big issue next week!
I can't sign off
without a big congratulations to College Hill Forum President
Elizabeth Sherwood. Be sure to read on to find out why! And as
usual, if you've got news -- send it here.

Forum President Wins Josh Weiser
Award
College Hill
Forum President Elizabeth Sherwood was awarded the 2008
Josh Weiser award at last week's Forum meeting. Forum Vice President Amy Finnegan
announced the award this way: "This year's winner couldn't be
a surprise to anybody - except maybe our winner - who always
gives everybody else credit for everything." Elizabeth
has been president of the Forum for four terms. Her leadership
has increased attendance, brought critical issues to the
forefront, insured that decision-making has been inclusive of
every viewpoint, and made Forum meetings more meaningful - and
fun. The Josh Weiser Community Service Award was
established 1987 to honor longtime College Hill volunteer H.
Joshua Weiser, and has been presented annually since then. Its
purpose is to recognize those who have provided outstanding
volunteer leadership to College Hill and to encourage others
to serve their community in the future. Thanks to Phyllis Slusher for this
story and

Guest Bartenders Night Returns
Enjoy a night at the Clovernook Country Club --
whether you're a member or not -- and help College Hill at the
same time! Next Tuesday (Veteran's Day), the country
club will host the semi-annual Guest Bartenders Night
benefitting CHCURC from 6-9
pm. Visit with neighbors, enjoy complimentary hors d'oevres,
learn what's new in the business district, and buy drinks or
chances to win a week in South Carolina. All proceeds go to
CHCURC to support ongoing projects. Dinner will also be
available from the club's menu. Guest bartenders include Brad
and Meg Hammond, Dave and Sandy Schwartz, and more. Call Beth
McLean at 300-6168 for more
information. |
| Kiwanis Hosts Veteran's Day Program
Here's another Veteran's Day event -- and
fortunately, it's in the morning so you can do both.
Army Major Wendy Rodriguez and Master Sergeant Abel
Rodriguez will be the featured speakers at the
Northside/College Hill Kiwanis club's Nov. 11 Veterans Day
program. Former Senator John Glenn has also been invited to
attend, although he has not yet confirmed, according to Jan
Holland, the club's president.
An 11:30 a.m. luncheon
will precede the program, which will take place in the Gulden
Center at Twin Towers, 5343 Hamilton Ave. in College Hill, at
noon. Lunch is $3, while the program is free. Both are open to
the public.

St. Clare 20s Bash Sells Out
Almost 300
people gathered at St. Clare Church Saturday for its annual
fundraising dinner and auction -- this year, with a Roaring
20s theme.
Marty Weldishofer chaired the event with
help from last year's chairman, Ken Straub, and dozens of busy
volunteers who transformed the Parish Center into an elegant
1920s ballroom. Most people came in costume, like the couple
pictured at left, and one of the best dressed of all was
College Hill Historical Society President Sarah Wolf --
pictured at right, bobbed wig and all, helping with one of the
many raffles.

College Hill Memories
Nancy Ducker, one of the people who wrote about
purchasing calendars, sent these memories of College Hill (and
a few nice things about this publication):
I so love the College Hill
Newsletter. I live in Katy, TX near Houston but grew up
in College Hill, went to St. Clare church and school, and was
a member of the first graduating class of McAuley High
School. My grandparents lived on Saranac Ave. right
behind St. Clare School. I got married at St. Clare and
my husband and I raised our children in College Hill on Larch
Ave. near Town Hall until 1978 when we moved out of the city.
Thank you for keeping me so well
informed.
Thank YOU for reading,
Nancy!

| Aiken Shantytown
The courtyard area of Aiken High School became a
"Shanty Town" on Thursday evening, October 16th.
More
than 50 students and staff members slept under the
stars in boxes, joining students in more than a dozen
schools around the region learning about life for the
homeless.
The project was developed by the
Leadership Team of the Aiken campus. Speakers from the
Homeless Coalition, Project Connect, and the College Hill
Community told the students about the plight of the homeless.
The experience taught the participants that
people who find themselves homeless struggle with many
problems; perhaps the most challenging is
self-esteem. Students and staff members developed a new
empathy and a greater understanding for the
homeless.

staff.

Card, Gift Wrap Sale at Llanfair
Llanfair's annual gift wrap and card sale is coming up
November 3rd and 4th -- get all your holiday wrap and cards
for only 10 cents each!
"ALL of the money goes to the
Llanfair Life Care Fund, which provides for our residents who
have outlived their resources," says Chairman Kathy Kiefer.
"Eighteen of our residents are currently supported by the
Life Care Fund.
"In addition to the money raised, we
provide a wonderful service for our residents and
staff. Many residents are no longer able to go to the
store, so this gives them a rare opportunity to go
shopping. Our staff members also appreciate
the sale, especially this year in our tight
economy."
Monday's sale is at the Campus Center in the
Terrace Building, from 9 am to 3 pm. Tuesday's sale is
at the Larchwood Lounge from 9 am to 3 pm. First come, first
served!

Facade Program Spotlight
The storefronts in this facade program project aren't
the most beautiful in College Hill -- but thanks to the
building owner, the city, and CHCURC, they are now neat,
clean, and free from flaking and peeling paint. This
"spotlight" feature focuses on the three storefronts at the
left of this picture, but the project actually included PNC
Bank, Goodies, and the College Hill Plaza, so it was a
spruce-up with a big impact.

| More Work on The Avenue
Spotted on The Avenue this week: A lot going on at
the House of Joy -- a lot of ladders, a lot of paint, a lot of
workers. And up at Pearce's, the faded, shredded awning came
down and everything got a new paint job.
Meanwhile, two
more buildings are getting brand new brick facades. Photos to
come when there's more to see!

Check Our Online Calendar for Music and More!
Co-editor Ken Lyon is on a well-deserved vacation,
and until he comes back there won't be a mini-calendar at the
end of the newsletter. But don't let that deter you -- click
here for a list
of all the great things coming up in College
Hill! | |
The eNewsletter is published every week or two by
the volunteers listed below. Our purpose is to help make
College Hill an even better place to live, play and do
business by publishing a broad spectrum of news for and about
College Hill, with an emphasis on stories of College Hill
people working together to improve our community.
The eNewsletter is
independently prepared and published by neighborhood
volunteers. It is not affiliated with the College Hill
Forum Community Council.
Opinions expressed here are not necessarily those of any
College Hill or other organization--or even of the editor. The
inclusion of an article is not necessarily an endorsement. The
fact that something isn't in the eNewsletter is not
necessarily a lack of endorsement--it's most likely because no
one told us about it.
eNewsletter photos are often edited to remove
extraneous material.
Send us news that you think would be interesting to your
College Hill neighbors--and we'll very likely publish it.
