Dear Reader,

BLOWN AWAY

marshal with 90% powerless headline

College Hill was hit hard by the remnants of Hurricane Ike colliding with a big wind in the jet stream, knocking down trees and limbs and knocking out power in the worst power outage in Ohio history. Co-editor Ken Lyon, who has been stuck in Mississippi due to the hurricane, isn't hurrying home yet!

Here is a look at some of the damage. We expect to have a photo gallery up on line later this week, and we will post information about how you can share your photos in our next issue. The calendar will be back in that issue, along with our regular news and photos.

100-Year-Old Oak Down
An oak tree more than a century old came down Sunday afternoon, one of the last of the oaks that lined Savannah Avenue when it was a private drive.

The tree, planted in the early 1800s when 6254 Savannah was one of the first homes built on the vast property belonging to the Ephraim Brown family. The Brown house at 6268 was built in 1812, and is College Hill's oldest home.

savannah house #2The round median at Savannah and Meis was the carriage turnaround, and the oak trees lining the gas lit drive were meant to make it look like a drive in Georgia.

City workers took down most of the old oaks in the late 1980s, residents say, after one fell. Only a few, which weren't in the public right-of-way, remain. A second was damaged in Sunday's storm, losing a large limb.

Remarkably, the tree itself did not damage any property. It knocked down several smaller trees that did minor damage to the home next door (left), but missed the houses and wires.

The eNewsletter is published every week or two by the volunteers listed below. Our purpose is to help make College Hill an even better place to live, play and do business by publishing a broad spectrum of news for and about College Hill, with an emphasis on stories of College Hill people working together to improve our community.

The eNewsletter is independently prepared and published by neighborhood volunteers.  It is not affiliated with the College Hill Forum Community Council.

Opinions expressed here are not necessarily those of any College Hill or other organization--or even of the editor. The inclusion of an article is not necessarily an endorsement. The fact that something isn't in the eNewsletter is not necessarily a lack of endorsement--it's most likely because no one told us about it.

eNewsletter photos are often edited to remove extraneous material.

Send us news that you think would be interesting to your College Hill neighbors--and we'll very likely publish it. Email to eNewsletter@CollegeHillOH.net.
