Dear Reader,
This week's issue is early so you can read it
here first: Our two Aiken High Schools are
combining. We thank Principal Virginia Rhodes for
getting the word to us so we could get it to you.

Combinatorial Math: Aiken + Aiken = Aiken
Aiken University
High School Principal Virginia Rhodes writes, "Here is the hot
scoop on a very recent decision involving the Aiken High
Schools."
Aiken University High
School, Ohio's first and only urban Environmental Studies
high school, will be merged with Aiken College &
Career High School in the fall of 2009, reuniting the
Aiken Falcons as a single school once more.
Aiken U. will continue to operate in its present form
this coming school year, however, Dr. Virginia Rhodes, who
started the Environmental focus, will take over as Principal
of Western Hills Design Technology this August. Both AU
and Design Tech are considered "STEM" (science, technology,
engineering & math) schools. Eric Thomas,
present principal of ACC, will serve as Principal of both
schools on the Aiken campus for the 08-09 school
year. Dr. Rhodes and Mr. Thomas have worked together to
improve the academic climate on the Aiken campus. They have
worked with the College Hill Forum and have been visible and
active around the College Hill community, improving
relationships between neighborhood residents and Aiken
students. The merger decision is timely, as the
Cincinnati Public School Design Team process calls for the
Aiken campus to be rebuilt as a new school, with demolition
and construction beginning as early as summer of 2009.
Aiken students will attend school in a "swing" space, with the
location yet to be determined. Dr. Rhodes, a College
Hill resident, says "I have enjoyed my work at Aiken immensely
for the last two years," and looks forward to running into all
the College Hill folks at the coffee shop and post office.

CHCURC Raises $14,000; Director of Community
Development Retained
Fundraiser at
Laurel Court Raises $10,000Over 70 guests
attended a College Hill Community Urban Redevelopment
Corporation fund raiser-- Summer Fete, an Evening of
Song--at Laurel Court the
end of June. Kudos go to many of College Hill's residents and
businesses and to Judy and Larry Moyer, the owners of Laurel
Court, for helping CHCURC raise over $10,000 at this
event. With such a beautiful setting, catered
appetizers and delightful entertainment, the lively evening
was over much too soon. The evening began with musical
entertainment provided by the inspiring students of Peraza's
Music Workshop--Leah Anderson, age 12; Bryson Karrer, age 9;
and Deidra Ryan age 14. College Hill Forum President
Elizabeth Sherwood served as the Mistress of Ceremonies and
had the crowd rolling in the aisles with her witticisms (see a
previous edition
of the eNewsletter for
"You Know You're From College Hill If..."). How many
communities can boast that the President of their community
council is a comedienne? Mezzo soprano Miriam Allbee
performed beautifully, accompanied by husband Mike
Kelly. These recording artists and their two children
reside in College Hill. eNewsletter Appeal Raises
$4000Additional thanks go to those who
responded to the electronic appeal for funds in a special CHCURC edition of
the eNewsletter.
CHCURC President Mike Cappel reached out to the College Hill
community to keep our Director of Community Development (Marty
Welidshofer) funded. That appeal brought in close to
$4000 in donations! These two fund raising efforts have
enabled CHCURC to keep our Director of Community Development
working under contract on a part time basis.
Future Fund
RaisersMore fund raising efforts are needed and
are underway.
- The next event will be the 5th annual 5K Rhythm Run/Walk
on Saturday, September 20th. Typically about 50
or more volunteers work together to carry out this
event. If you are interested in volunteering for the
Rhythm Race, please contact Mike Cappel at mikecappel@gmail.com .
- Later this fall, another Celebrity Bar Tending event
will be held at the Clovernook Country Club.
Thanks again for your generous support of
CHCURC's mission to improve College Hill through economic and
community development. Contributed by Carolyn

Local Couple at Extreme Makeover
Thousands of people volunteered last week, when
Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition built a new house for the Akers family of West
Chester. And some of those volunteers were from College Hill!
Spotted at the Families of SMA (Spinal Muscular
Atrophy) booth were Gwen and Geoff Tipton (right).
Two
of the Akers children suffer from SMA, a degenerative genetic
disease that destroys the nerves controlling voluntary
movement. The Tiptons told us they volunteered because they
have friends who have a child with SMA. To find out how you
can help families with SMA, see the link above.
Did you
volunteer for Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition? Let us know at enewsletter@collegehillohio.org.

Parolees Give Back to College Hill
Many people don't know that for the past
two years, some badly needed work at neighborhood churches and
non-profits has been done by the State of Ohio--through
parolees from state prison. The College Hill Forum
Quality of Life Team arranges work for the parolees, provides
them with a free lunch, and works alongside them and their
parole officers. The men are non-violent offenders who are
allowed to work outside. "These guys are hard workers,
and many of them look forward to working with us
each month," says QOL coordinator Phyllis Schoenberger. "Lunch
provides an opportunity to talk with us, which has been very
rewarding, and provides them with a full meal that they
generally don't have." For the past few months some of
these men have been working on the Cincinnati Black Theater
Company's building, scraping paint from the brick to prepare
it to be painted again. When the CBTC finishes tuck
pointing, the parolees will give the building a gorgeous new
coat of paint. Phyllis expects that to happen either on the
next work day (this week) or next month. If you would
like to prepare a lunch for future work days, email Phyllis at
phylmark@fuse.net. |

If you would like to "host a high school exchange
student and experience the world at its best," call Sherrie at
513-550-0618, or Clyde Brown at 513-550-0617.

The eNewsletter is published every week or two by
the volunteers listed below. Our purpose is to help make
College Hill an even better place to live, play and do
business by publishing a broad spectrum of news for and about
College Hill, with an emphasis on stories of College Hill
people working together to improve our community.
The eNewsletter is
independently prepared and published by neighborhood
volunteers. It is not affiliated with the College Hill
Forum Community Council.
Opinions expressed here are not necessarily those of any
College Hill or other organization--or even of the editor. The
inclusion of an article is not necessarily an endorsement. The
fact that something isn't in the eNewsletter is not
necessarily a lack of endorsement--it's most likely because no
one told us about it.
eNewsletter photos are often edited to remove
extraneous material.
Send us news that you think would be interesting to your
