Dear Reader,
It's a big week: the start of Lent for many of us,
the first of many Friday night St. Clare Church Fish Fries,
Spaghetti Dinner Sunday at McAuley High School, Fine Arts
Sampler Weekend...and much more.
It's time to register for next year's school--see below
about College Hill preschools and about the EdChoice
Scholarship voucher program.
And a College Hill-based choir is competing in a local
Cincinnati version of Clash of the Choirs.
And don't forget College Hill Night at the last Aiken
Falcons varsity basketball game of the season this
Friday.
Just another typical week in the neighborhood...see you
next week!

| Aiken Students Honored for Essays
 Aiken students won
two of three $1,000 scholarships awarded on Martin Luther King
Day by the Student Activity Foundation.
Alyshia Burten, Aiken University High School, and Shamel
St. Clair, Aiken College and Career High School, won
scholarships for their essays on "What the Dream Means to Me."
The third scholarship went to Mauricea Standifer of Dater High
School.
Six other CPS high school students won $50 prizes and
tickets to the Cricket Wireless Martin Luther King Day
Classic.
The Student Activity Foundation was founded three years
ago by Cincinnati Public Schools to help students improve
their academic performance by strengthening extracurricular
activities. | |
| Recreation Center Gets Help Supporting Teens
 The
College Hill Recreation Center is re-focusing on teen
memberships.
When the College Hill Forum community council purchased
several dozen teen memberships for teens at Aiken and in area
youth groups, the center was flooded with students every day
after school hours. Membership has since dwindled because the
kids say they can't afford the $8 membership.
So the Forum has stepped up again, along with Cincinnati
City Council member Leslie Ghiz's law firm and Councilman Jeff
Berding's office, to purchase between 50 and 60 teen
memberships. That's great news for area teens looking for
something to do.

| College Hill Night at Aiken
Saturday night the Aiken Falcons will honor senior
players and cheerleaders at the final varsity boys' basketball
game of the season.

See the team that talent scouts, sports writers, and
sports broadcasters are talking about--a team that is getting
stronger every game.

The Falcons invite all College Hill residents to come and
be part of the excitement. Arrive at 7 Saturday for the 7:30
pm game against Meadowdale High School.

| College Hill Potluck Dinner Scheduled
 The annual College
Hill Potluck Dinner will be February 29 at College Hill
Presbyterian Church.
Beat the winter blahs and eat yourself silly at the
largest community dinner in College Hill. Since it is a leap
year, this year's theme is "Leap Into Spring."
The dinner will be from 5:30-8 pm. Bring a dish to serve
10-12 neighbors:
- last name A-H: salad and/or vegetable,
- last name I-S: entree and/or casserole,
- last name T-Z: dessert.
Enjoy food, fun--and the organizers promise great door
prizes!

| Cincinnati SuperChoir on Channel 5
 College Hill's Cincinnati
SuperChoir is one of eight choirs competing on Cincinnati's
Clash of the Choirs on Channel 5.
The SuperChoir, which rehearses in College Hill, is led
by evangelist and radio personality P. Ann Everson-Price and
performs at venues around the city.
On Valentine's Day, Channel 5 will air a short
documentary about the choir during the 5:00 news. Tune in and
see someone you know!
 In the meantime
you can see the choir sing "Over My Head" here. You can see all
the choirs, and vote for your favorite choir here. So far some of
the other choirs are outstripping our hometown singers, so let
your friends know to watch and vote.
The other choirs competing are: Winton Woods, the SCPA,
Elder HIgh School Glee Club, First Unitarian Church,
Cincinnati Sound, the Allen Temple AME Church, and the
Cincinnati Boychoir.
The SuperChoir has three divisions: children, teens, and
young adults. Miss P. Ann says new singers are always
welcome--there is no fee and no auditions are required.
Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 6:30-7:30 pm at the College
Hill Presbyterian Church.
Mentors and section leaders are always needed--no age
limit. For information call P. Ann at 513-236-9589.

| College Hill Home on Television
 One of the new
commercials for becoming a foster parent was filmed in a
College Hill home.
The "Everyday Heroes" campaign for the Ohio Dept. of Jobs
and Family Services kicked off last week. Each commercial
shows a man or woman dressed in a superhero outfit doing
housework and other homey tasks.
One of the homes in the commercials belongs to John and
Nancy Zint, of Laurelwood Court. Mary Seguin, a College Hill
resident and videographer, was the location scout and did the
props and set styling with assistant Amy Cluxton, who grew up
in College Hill.
"I knew the home would fit the bill," Mary says.
The photo shows one of the actors dressed as an "everyday
hero" the day of filming.
You can read a Business Courier article about
Everyday Heroes" here. |
| St. Clare Fish Fry Fridays are Back for
Lent
Today is Ash Wednesday, the start
of Lent, and that means it's time for St. Clare Church's
Friday night Fish Fries.
All College Hill is invited to a hearty, affordable meal
of fish dinners (baked, fried, or shrimp). If you're not the
fish type, there's meatless pizza. Takeout is available.
Dinner is served from 5-7:30 pm. Some weeks the line is
out the door, so allow plenty of time.
Sam Stare wrote to let us know that Channel 5 is looking
for Cincinnati's best fish fry. Whether you're a parishioner
or you just like the cooking, vote for St. Clare Fish Fry here. |
| McAuley Annual Spaghetti Dinner

McAuley High School Vocal Ensemble invites you to dinner and a

McAuley Vocal Ensemble entertains with live performances
throughout the evening. Basket raffles, candy roses, and
split-the-pot raffles will help fund the ensemble's trip to
Chicago for their annual competition.

seniors/students, and $2.50 for children under 5) and will be

| School News: Time to Apply for Vouchers
 Students in
under-performing public schools can apply for state vouchers
for private school tuition through April 18.
Ohio EdChoice grants
give up to $4,375 for elementary school tuition and up to
$5,150 for high school tuition. Students must be accepted to a
private school that will take the vouchers (not all do).
Some nearby schools that accept EdChoice vouchers include Eden
Grove Academy, McAuley High School, St. Vivian School, and the
Cincinnati Waldorf School. St. Bartholomew Consolidated
School, the parish school for St. Clare Church families, does
not accept vouchers.
Students are eligible for vouchers if they attend (or,
for children registering for kindergarten, would attend) the
following local schools: Aiken College and Career High School,
Aiken University High School, Chase School, Mt. Airy School
and Pleasant Hill Academy.
These schools must be, or must have been in, "academic
emergency" or "academic watch" for two of the past three
years. Both Aiken high schools are now rated above these
levels, but students are still eligible because they had lower
ratings the two previous years.
Students who are currently enrolled in a private school
or who are home-schooled do not qualify for the grants. ONLY
students currently attending these schools, or who would
attend them for kindergarten, are eligible.
Families apply for the vouchers through the schools they
wish to attend.
For more information, read the Enquirer's story here. |

either 10-10:45 am or 12-12:45 pm. To enroll, or for further

Three Cs Nursery School, 2008-2009 Year: This Christian
co-op preschool has been offered at College Hill
Presbyterian Church for almost 30 years. Half-day sessions
for ages 3 and 4, preschoolers, and kindergarteners are

fact that something isn't in the eNewsletter is not
