DISCUSSION: 1. Special Announcements There was one special announcement: demolition of the Saba building would begin at 10 am, and the Summit meeting would be shortened by 20-30 minutes to allow Summit members to attend. Local TV stations and the Vice Mayor would be part of the ceremony. Separately, Ric gave a brief update on the Rec Center. He noted that this is the 9th year the Rec Center has been operating in College Hill. The Director for all the City Recreation Centers has resigned. Mike Thomas is now the Interim Director. The study of consolidating Recreation with Parks continues in the City.
2. Review of April 2011 Minutes
3. Review of Action Items from Previous Meetings · Ric gave a short update on the progress of the mural project. · Off. Pechiney attempted to contact Arnice regarding the fight, and followed up with her after the Summit meeting. · Kym Terrel was in attendance at this meeting, and indicated she plans to attend regularly.
4. COP/CPOP/CourtWatch/CPD – by Officer Jason Pechiney Crime stats for April were handed out; overall crime levels have increased as the weather has warmed up. Catalytic converters are being stolen again, after a long time, which implies that the perpetrator was in jail and then recently released. More volunteers are needed for COP.
5. Children’s Hospital No one was present to give an update for Children’s Hospital.
6. CHBA – by Karen Hartman The CHBA Annual Dinner was held on April 20 at The Gather, and was a great success. Governor Williams spoke about safety. There is a new business on the avenue, called “Enliven”, which does manicures, pedicures, and massages. A beauty salon will go into the old Angerts Building and open in July.
7. College Hill Gardeners – by Karen Hartman CHG’s annual plant sale was a success. They raised about 1200 tomato plants in the Aiken greenhouse, and sold nearly all of them. This is the last year CHG was able to use the Aiken greenhouse because of the demolition. The annual Garden Tour will be June 18. Tickets are available at the Coffee Company. The tour is exclusively a walking tour this year.
8. CHCURC Update – by Pete Bauer The building at 1631 Hamilton Ave was purchased by CHCURC. This address is next to the Moon Beauty Supply company. Demolition of the Saba building is scheduled to begin at 10 am today, and is expected to be completed by July 2011. This will permit expansion of the parking lot, as well as enable businesses along this section of Hamilton Ave to add outdoor seating. CHCURC is raising money for a challenge grant, and has raised $100,000 so far toward a goal of $200,000, which will be matched by the grant. The next fund raising event is “Italian Night” at the Coffee Company on May 22. Cost is $25 per person. Donations to CHCURC have been $29,000 in the last year, in services, in-kind, and in cash. It appears that $10,000 may be eligible to go to the matching grant fund. The May 7 “Race for the Roses” fundraiser at Laurel Court raised more than $14,000. There will be a Golf event fundraiser at Clovernook on July 25. $6000 in corporate sponsorship has already been raised. The annual Rhythm Race is scheduled for September 10 and needs volunteers to be on the committee to work on the planning. The chairpersons of the Rhythm Race are already hard at work on corporate/community sponsorships. Anyone wishing to be a sponsor please contact Juanita Canfield at 633-0012 or Andrea Schwartz at Schwartz Jewelers. There continue to be issues with the north Gateway installation. The city believed it owned an easement for the gateway, but has determined that it does not. More work needs to be done.
9. College Hill Schools Updates McAuley High School – by Cheryl Sucher McAuley’s spring Concert is Friday night, called “Music Through the Decades”. Tickets are available at the door for $5 The school year’s closing Mass will be May 19. The class of 1964 was invited to join. The school will be burying a time capsule, but haven’t yet decided what to put in it. Graduation is May 26 at the Northern KY Convention Center. Baccalaureate is May 25 at the Cathedral. There will be some staff at the school, including Cheryl Sucher, all summer. Feel free to drop in. Summit Academy Ron shared that Summit’s enrollment has grown so much that they have no space to host a Summit meeting, even though they would like to. In order to host a meeting, they need to do it on a day when a field trip is scheduled in order to have classroom space. It is unclear if they will be able to host a meeting anytime yet this year. Aiken High School May 21st is Community Appreciation Day. Pleasant Hill Academy The new principal for Pleasant Hill is Shauna McDowell.
10. College Hill Housing Team No one from WIN attended the meeting. Fr. George commented that the grass at 1402 is very high and creates the appearance of an abandoned building. There was a short discussion about copper theft, and it was asked if WIN uses copper piping in their rehabs and new buildings. They do not. It was shared that there has been some success in the Northside community with putting signs on buildings that say “No Copper”, and suggested that WIN might try the same thing. After the meeting, Ron discovered that he had missed an email from Hope. He forwarded the email to the Summit members. In the email, she shared the following: · The sale of 1402 Cedar will be complete next Friday 5/20. · We signed our contract for grass cutting this week. The properties will be cut by this weekend. We apologize for the delay. · Our “coming soon” and “for sale” signs are now on any site that has an actual property. · We’ve signed our contracts for 1307 Cedar. Our preconstruction meeting is Friday. So beginning next week they will begin seeing the contractor on site. · 1192 Cedar: the siding and roof work will begin next week if the weather cooperates. · 1309 Cedar will begin late June or early July
11. College Hill Library – by Arnice Smith Arnice handed out a calendar of events and programs for May and June. She also handed out a poster on the Summer Reading program, which she requested to be posted in local businesses. The child, teen, and adult who read the most at each location will win a Nook Color. More information is available at cincinnatilibrary.org/summerread Arnice handed out a letter about the eighth annual College Hill Community Cookout at the Library on July 15. This is a community event, and all are invited to come. All are invited to help make it a success as well, by contributing money, gift cards, and/or perishable and non-perishable food items. Contact Arnice directly if you are able to contribute. They held a successful workshop for Online Job Applications in April. 10 people participated. It is now the most frequently requested class, so the Library is planning to have this class once per month, starting from August. The hiring freeze is still in place. The impact of budget issues will not be known until July.
12. e-newsletter Update – by Kym Terrel Kym shared her new email for the newsletter: collegehillenewsletter@gmail.com She said that mail sent to the previous address will be forwarded to the new one. Please send short blurbs and photos to these email addresses, and submit by Thursday of each week because the enewsletter comes out on Fridays.
13. Ministerium Update – by Fr. George Jacquemin Interfaith Hospitality Network continues as an emphasis of the Ministerium again this year. Christ’s Community is now deep into planning Summer Camp for community kids. Donations are needed to help pay the salaries of the teen counselors. 1st UCC is having Churchapalooza again this year, on May 22, from 3:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
14. Discussion Topic: Community Communications Cheryl invited the McAuley PR Director, Kathy Dietrich, to come to Summit and be part of this discussion, since we all perceive McAuley to particularly good at communication. Kathy shared the following: · She does a Press Release asap after an event is over. It needs to go out fast to be relevant to local new reporters. · She collects anything published about McAuley then has it bound into a book once a year. · She handed out a list of email addresses she uses and commented that Community Press publishes everything she sends to them. These email addresses are in Attachment # 1 to this meeting summary. · She handed out a sample Press Release, which included both the event and a brief description of McAuley High School. · She shared that Google Alerts can be set up to get news on a specific topic anytime it is mentioned in the press, whether online or in print. Brad commented that Facebook and Constant Contact can be good ways to keep in communication with people.
