Community Activities & Announcements

DISCUSSION:

1.   Special Announcements

None.

2.   Review of May 2010 Minutes
The May 2010 were approved.

3.   Review of Action Items from Previous Meetings

(a)  Dept of Justice Article: Done.  Tom sent the link to the article to Valerie in March, who overlooked it in her email until early June.  She found it and forwarded it to the Summit at that time.

(b)  New Habitat Director:  Ron contacted the new Habitat for Humanity director, Ed Lee, who was unable to attend this meeting.  However, he asked to be put on the distribution list and plans to attend in the future.

(d) Email of Key CCHMA Activities:  Matt indicated that most community oriented activities, like the plant sale, tend to have very short lead times and so he is not really able to give us a calendar of activities.  The group encouraged him to send out information on each activity, whenever it is available, and in particular to send information to Tom Strothers for the community calendar website posting and to the e-newsletter.

4.   COP/CPOP/CourtWatch/CPD – by Jim Bodmer

Jim handed out copies of the May Crime Report.  Crime continues slightly up vs one year ago in several categories, but mostly in theft-related ones (Robberies, Theft, Auto Theft, Theft From Auto).

In addition, many known troublemakers are back out on the street.  COP still needs more volunteers.  Many people sign up but don’t follow through.

Lots of residents are honking and waving at COP members, which is making them feel appreciated.

5.   Children’s Hospital Update – by Matt Schwendeman

Matt introduced Joan Burger’s replacement, Christine (Tina) Neltner.  Tina will be regularly attending Summit meetings in place of Matt.

Matt expressed Children’s appreciation for the great community support it has received, especially in the various fund-raising events.  All the money raised goes back to kids who are healthy enough to go on local trips, like to local pools or Kings Island.

6.   Housing Team Update – by Hope Wilson

The most recent new house at 1402 Cedar is complete and is for sale.

The rehab of 5918 Lantana is almost complete.  It is little but cute.

1192 Cedar and 1309 Cedar will be NSP houses.

1142 Cedar was just acquired.  It will be torn down.

House designs are being reviewed for 1208 Cedar.

WIN is trying to buy 1301 Cedar.

WIN is sponsoring a meeting with the US Treasury next Tuesday (June 15) at St Clare’s Parish Center. WIN is a HUD certified housing counseling agency, and as such, participates in the Federal Government’s “Making Homes Affordable” program.  This program is administered by the Treasury Dept, but nationally has not been as effective as desired.  The meeting on June 15 is a local hearing with the Treasury Dept on this program.  The meeting will run 1-2 hours, and WIN wants both advocates and people affected by the program to attend.  A flyer was handed out.

WIN will hold a Foreclosure Forum on July 6 at CHPC from 7 pm to 8:30 pm.

7.   CHCURC Update – by Pete Bauer

Highlights of the CHCURC update included:

·         Hillrise is not doing well.  CHCURC and the Forum are trying to help ERH (Episcopalian Retirement Homes) to acquire and renovate it.

·         Green Top Arts Collective, a specialty Iron Works, opened last weekend.

·         The process of buying the EZ Market is continuing.

·         The southern Gateway is installed.  Look for it at the corner of Llanfair and Hamilton, in front of the new firehouse.

·         There is a lack of cleanliness around the ATM at North Bend & Hamilton.  Someone is following up to contact the city.

·         CHCURC is still looking for an entrepreneur to purchase Hillrise and renovate it.

·         The 8th Annual Rhythm Race will be August 19.  CHCURC is looking for sponsors.

·         Each year, each neighborhood in the city submits projects to the CNBDU (Cincinnati Neighborhood Business Districts United) to request funding.  Each neighborhood submits a major project and a minor project.  This year, CHCURC’s major project was to acquire and tear down the Saba property, which was approved.  The minor project was to acquire some properties behind the House of Joy.   However, the properties are held by the City, which failed to put them up for sale.  Understandably, the House of Joy was disappointed.

8.   College Hill Schools Updates

No representatives were present from any of the schools, but other Summit members were able to offer some information.

College Hill Fundamental Academy

Jim handed out copies of an article on College Hill Fundamental Academy, in which, the author explores why and how a school in a low income area is able to achieve an Excellent rating.

The new school building will be ready for this fall, and CH Fundamental Academy will be moved in my August 14.

Aiken High School

This coming year will be Aiken’s last on the site before the buildings are demolished for rebuilding.  Aiken will be in a swing space for about 2 years while the old buildings are town down and the school is rebuilt.

Eric Thomas has been asked by the school board to take on the additional responsibility of overseeing Elementary Schools in the distract that are in Academic Emergency.  Fortunately, Eric has strong staff who can assume more leadership at Aiken.

9.   Ministerium/Christ’s Community Update – by Fr. George Jacquemin

There have been 5-6 meetings of the Bridges On The Avenue group.  The next meeting will be June 14.

The Interfaith Hospitality program is continuing, with several families arriving at CHPC starting June 20.

Christ’s Community:

The summer program for youth has room for about 100 neighborhood kids.  CHPC, St. Clare, and Grace Episcopal will partner in the program and organize activities.  At the end of summer, Ron Whitt will transition to spending much more time with City Cure.

10. College Hill Gardeners – by Juanita Canfield

The Gardens of College Hill Tour is June 14.  Tour packets are available at the College Hill Coffee company.  A quilt is also being raffled.  The money raised will go to taking care of the traffic islands.

11. Library Update

No one was present from the Library.

12. College Hill Business Association

There are three new businesses in College Hill:

Green Top Arts Collective

Magnificent Morsels Restaurant and Catering

Steezo Inc, which does construction and home repairs.

Copies of the menus for Magnificent Morsels were passed around.

13. Discussion Topic: Community Marketing Strategy

Key points made in the discussion included:

·         All building owners have not been interested in participating in a coordinated marketing effort.  Attempts were made to contact owners of all vacant storefronts by letter and then by phone follow up.  Some simply did not respond.  Most of what is being done now is being done by individual property owners.

·         There are some leads for the store fronts where St. Theresa’s used to be.

·         There are a lot of viable businesses in College Hill, but people are just not aware of them.

·         Businesses need to have an interest in participating with, engaging with community.

·         Years ago, the business district used to do a coordinated sidewalk sale on a Friday evening and all day Saturday.  They won’t do it now because of issues with theft.

·         There is no common vision between the African American and Caucasian business owners.  Everyone needs to have patience with the Bridges process.

CHBA is doing a brainstorming at their next meeting on this topic.  CHBA meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month at Hammond North.  Next meeting is June 16.
