DISCUSSION:
1. Special Announcements None.
2.
Review of January 2010 Minutes
3. Review of Action Items from Previous Meetings (a) Habitat for Humanity Rep to Summit: Ron has tracked down the local Habitat person; he has been invited to Summit and is expected to attend in March. (b) Youth Action List: No one had sent Ron & Valerie any information since the previous meeting.
4. COP/CPOP/CourtWatch/CPD – by Jim Bodmer & Officer Jason Penchiney Crime was up all over the city in January, although February has been reasonably quiet so far. A number of car thefts were due to people trying to “warm up” their cars by starting them, then leaving them unattended. CPOP continues to work on a youth program.
5. Housing Team Update The house at 1402 is nearly done. More information should be available at the next Summit meeting. Investors who want to flip houses or turn them into rentals continue to be active in College Hill, and WIN has unfortunately been outbid a couple of times by investors on properties in the Cedar Ave area. WIN recently bought a house on Ambrose to be part of the NSP-funded rehabbing.
6. CHBA Update No one was present from CHBA to give an update. The Annual Dinner is expected to be the 3rd Wednesday in April.
7. CHCURC Update No one was present from CHBA to give an update. People who attended the annual meeting & dinner felt it was well organized and that CHCURC presented a strong vision. Roxanne Qualls, the Keynote Speaker, praised College Hill for the amount of private investment going on in addition to obtaining help from the City. The EZ Market building is now owned by CHCURC. The vision includes owning all the building from EZ Market to Hodapp, and either renovating or tearing down & rebuilding.
8. College Hill Schools Updates No one was present from the schools to give an update, but various people who are active with the schools were able to share some information. The construction for renewing the College Hill Fundamental Academy is on schedule. Aiken has been invited to present at the next Cincinnati School Board meeting. Phyllis will email the date and time to everyone. The Rec Center has seen a big (positive) difference in the behavior of kids from Aiken. It has been much improved in the last 2-4 years. Other people commented that they don’t see teenage troublemakers hanging out on the street anymore.
9. YWAM Global Impact Tour – by Michael Stanley YWAM stands for Youth With A Mission, a Christian organization. Global Impact Tour is a program of YWAM that creates local community events in partnership with ministries, churches, and communities. The goal is to connect youth to morals and faith values, as well as to connect them to local mentors. The Cincinnati program is scheduled for Sept 22-24, with events in various high schools, including Aiken, Walnut Hills, Withrow, and others. Each school will have an assembling during schools hours that focus on a subject such as character building, followed by evening events at local churches.
10. Library Update – by Arnice Smith In general, things are going well at the library. Both circulation and foot traffic have been up in recent weeks. Libraries have been in the paper for the last 6 weeks because of the many great programs, like helping kids with homework. The College Hill Library will have a person available every Thursday to help with homework from 3 to 7 pm, starting March 4. However, there continue to be a number of truant students from local high schools, including Aiken and Finneytown. They don’t cause trouble, just hang out.
11. Children’s Hospital Update No one was at the meeting to give an update. Ron will contact Children’s about attending Summit.
12. College Hill Recreation Center – by Cyd Shuler Cyd did not have enough information to give an update. She said that Rick would send out more specifics by email. There was a short discussion about the status of the Youth Council. People wondered about progress. Arnice indicated that she wanted to be involved, and Ralph committed that Ron Whitt would contact her. Ralph committed to send Ron Whitt’s contact information to Valerie.
13. Ministerium Update – by Fr. George Jacquemin The Ministerium continues moving forward on its various initiatives: the Interfaith Hospitality Network, Building Bridges (among business owners), and the annual Martin Luther King Celebration. Ralph Williams gave an update for CCCH, which is very active: · They are meeting with Jerry Kirk (former pastor of CHPC) Monday and Tuesday to discuss doing a Young Life program, which Ralph remembers as very impactful in his own life. · There will be a spring banquet for the day camp program. They need funding of $10,000. Ralph will follow up to look into Drug Forfeiture Assets as a possible funding source. · The Food Pantry is booming. This is not unexpected, given the economic conditions. CCCH is open Monday-Thursday, 9 am to 3 pm.
14. Discussion Topic: Event Calendar for 2010 This topic came up previously with the idea that it would be very, very helpful to community organizations to have the dates for all community events finalized a year in advance. During this meeting, the idea shifted to the development of a teen or youth calendar. Ideas included an e-newsletter for youth/teens, and a youth calendar on the website where the current community calendar is set. People wondered if the Youth Council could own this. One idea that sparked a lot of interest was a youth/teen oriented College Hill Facebook page. Arnice and Cyd will follow up to meet to see if they can further develop this idea.
15. Community Activities and Announcements Ø Annual Block Party – the date has been set, and it will be August 3-6. Aug 3 is National Night Out. Chris Miller is leading the team planning this. Ø The 5th Annual Forum Pot Luck Dinner will be at CHPC on Feb 12th. 5:30 pm. Bring a dish for sharing.
Next Summit Meeting: March 11 @ 8 am at the Grace Episcopal Church.
